Octanoic acid, also known as caprylic acid, is a medium chain saturated fatty acid. Octanoic acid can be used to formulate self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS) that significantly improve the solubility and bioavailability, especially for highly metabolized drugs, compared to the drug alone. Octanoic acid is also often included in the inner phase core of polymer-based nanoparticles to solubilize a wide range of drugs.
